Netbook Reflection 2013

How has having a netbook connected to the internet helped our learning this year?

This has been our first year sharing on our blogs. To become cybersmart we have been learning how to create a positive digital footprint.

Shanelle, Sajiha and Andrea have collaborated to create this graphic to share Room 10's learning throughout the year.

Open the Google Drawing to explore our learning. We have learnt from many people and many different places.

A New Pet

Today at 12.30am,  I went to the SPCA and got a new pet.  I got a dog.  He was a black and white dog.  His breed was a “Siberian Husky”.  I only got him when he was still a puppy.  When I got him, he was in a box with big round holes in it.  I was so excited to get home so  I nearly dropped the box on the footpath..

When I got home, my mum remembered that I should take care of it and feed it.  She had also bought some toys for him to play with.  Then I named him Lotus.  I called him that that because my dad has a car called the “Lotus exige” that has black stripes and white paint.  When I showed my dad Lotus, he made a collar that had his car on it and it said “Too Fast For You”.  Then he wrote TFFY for it.  The next 2 days I went out and took him out for a walk around the park.  When I stopped to tie my shoes, Lotus ran away and went somewhere I could not find him.  The line was still on him.  He was dragging it somewhere I would not know.

Then I ran to my house and told my mum “Lotus has run away from me!”.  My mum said “Where is he”.  Then I pointed out to some trees and said “ Over There”.  When she looked, she called the SPCA and told them to help us find. Then they replied to my mum and said “We are coming”.  My dad told me to come and look for him in his Lotus while my mum made posters and put them on the wall.  When we went past we saw a dog like lotus but was a bulldog.  So we went home.  On the next day my mum shook a packet of biscuits and saw a dog running back home to us with a red collar with the same as Lotus’s collar.  So I ran down stairs and opened the door with a big surprise.  It was Lotus.

Then I carried him upstairs and fed him his favourite biscuits and some water.  He was eating and drinking  them very fast.  After that my mum put down the posters and got a good sleep because she was tired of talking to all thoses people.  Then Lotus got a good night’s rest next to me so I can protect him.  I also taught him some new tricks in the morning.

My little sister

I read a book called ‘My little sister.’ This book is  about two little girls playing and looking after each other. They like to play in the sandpit and they like to play on the swing. They play in their playhouse and they read books then they go to sleep. They always look after each other. They like to do everything together and they never fight. They sleep with their dolls.  When I finished reading I wrote sentences about some pictures from the book.  I love reading this book.

The Incredible Whale

The Incredible Whale

Far away under the deep blue sea lived a humble and brave whale and he wasn't afraid of anything. He could fight off sharks and rip open the nets that captured his friends but he'll come back in cuts and bumps. The sea creatures were so proud of him that they made him a royal guard to serve the king and queen.

One night he was guarding the front gate all by himself because they were all having a party for the king and queen’s daughter.  Then a fisher net came down to catch him and it did. The whale couldn't get out and when he reached the top of the ocean he could breath but he pretended to be dead. When the fishers got to shore, the whale hopped out and he got trapped in a garden maze but he knew that he could not stop. He kept on going and he finally reached the other side and dived back into the sea because he knew it will be time to go home.

He got back just in time for dinner. He had a really good adventure but that wasn't his last.

Skin

Healthy skin

What is skin?
Skin is the thin  layer  of the tissue  forming the  natural  outer covering of our body. Skin is the  largest organ in the body . Subcutaneous tissue is the innermost layer of the skin located under the dermis and consisting mainly of fat. Subcutaneous fat acts as a shock absorber and heat insulator, protecting underlying tissues from cold and mechanical trauma.  Did you know that the sweat glands and  the  minute mussels attached to hair follicles originate in subcutaneous tissue?

Why  is our skin important?
Our skin is important because it protects everything inside our body. It's important to protect our skin from the sun; so we do not get skin cancer. If we protect our skin, we will have less wrinkles and less freckles and beauty marks.
Our skin is important  because  it protects  all our veins, blood vessels, arteries, and tissue. Skin is also a waterproof covering that keeps us cool in the hot, and it also moderates our temperature.

How do we take care of our skin?
We take care of our skin by washing ourselves properly. I would also recommend that we use a cleanser and moisturizer that do not contain harsh chemicals. I've also heard that sun screen in excess has cancer causing agents so be wary. Try to stay away from the drying agents and too much sun ( sun is healthy but burning is not).

What happens if we don’t take care of our skin?
If we don’t take care of our skin we could get sore skin, warts, pimples and more skin problems. Once it gets worst we will  have  skin cancer and more skin problems therefore we really need to take good care of our skin.

G.I School shows off their amazing skipping skills at the G.I centre.
by
Shanelle Williamson

Glen Innes School have been practising their skipping routines really hard before heading off to Glen Innes Shopping Centre to perform on Thursday the 27th of June. The children marched down to Glen Innes shopping centre. Most of the children were nervous but they were excited at the same time.

Mr. Naidoo and some helpers already set up the place. The children sat down around a big square looking very delighted. There was already a whole crowd of parents standing around looking at all the children.  Mr. Naidoo told everyone that they will be overwhelmed by the skipping skills of the children. Britney from room 11 was the MC for the day. She was pretty good.

Each class chose a music for their routine.  There was a variety of music played and it was very entertaining. Some parents were dancing to the music too. The children displayed great skipping skills and most people were amazed.

Everyone was cheering and screaming. So Mr.Naidoo was right, everyone was really impressed and wanted to see it again, but it was all over. The adults also had a chance to skip with their children at the end. One parent got the prize for being the best skipper. The children of Glen Innes School said, they will be performing at the same time next year.

This game is call snowball and it is a cool game because it helps me learn a lot of things. When you get in the game you have to check if you got the right answer. When you finish the game you can go and change your maths into addition, subtraction, geometry or timetables.

Yummy Apples by Shanelle

I have been learning my 1 to 20 times tables and believe me they are really hard. This game is really good for me because I know my 1 to 10 times tables and it will be challenging for people that don't know their times tables.

What causes night and day by Dion

Why do we have day and night?

Night and day is caused by the earth's rotation on its axis. The earth takes 24 hours to make a complete turn. When one side of the earth faces the sun this part has day the other half of the earth facing away from the sun have night.

The sun is the source of light for day. The sun does not move it seems to move across the sky starting in the east in the morning moving toward the south at noon and then toward the west as the day ends. It is the earth turning that makes it seem as though the sun is moving.

In conclusion, night and day is caused by the earth's rotation on its axis not the sun's rotation.

All about Astronomy by Anau

All about Astronomy
Sun
Our sun is a star located at the center of our solar system. It is a huge, spinning ball with hot gas and nuclear reaction that light up the earth and provides us with heat. The sun’s core has a tremendously high temperature which is roughly 15 million.

Moon

The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. The moon is a cold, dry orb whose surface is studded with craters and strewn with rock and dust (called regolith).

Solar system
Our solar system is located in the outer reaches of the milky way. The milky way contains roughly 200 billion stars. Most of these stars are not visible from earth. Almost everything that we can see in the sky belong to the Milky way or the galaxy.

Comets
A comet is a loose collection of ice, dust, and rock particles typically with a long, narrow orbit.
Comets have different colours including silver, blue, purple and gold at the end of their trail. Comets are usually blue or white at the front part. The color of the comet depend on its distance from the sun.

Planets
There are 8 planets in the solar system - Pluto is now a dwarf planet taking us down from 9. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus.

These are all the information I know about Astronomy.

Mother's Day Poem by Shanelle

Mother’s Day Poem

I love my mum from head to toe
We share our love that we both know.

She is the world to me
And it is true, you see.

I might forget her
but in my heart she will stay forever.

My mum is special in so many ways
And I will miss her every day.

She’s like a diamond in the sky
And she’s an angel that can fly.

My mum never rest
And she helps me to be the best.

Her lovely eye’s reminds me of the time
When me and my mum reads lovely rhymes.

Now you know how much I love my mum
She is bright like the sun.

Andrea reaches for the stars

In cybersmart we have been learning to create a positive digital footprint. We have been imagining what our digital footprint might look like in 10 years.

Creating a positive digital footprint

We have been learning to create a positive digital footprint. We have been making decisions about what information we are sharing about ourselves online. You can see more on our class CyberSmart page.

Here is Andrea's personal profile for her blog.

Hello, my name is Andrea and I am 9 yrs old. I live in Glen Innes, Auckland.  I am Maori/Niuean.  My mum is Maori and my dad is Niuean. I have 3 brothers, 1 sister and a dog named Kibou. In chinese it means hope.  I enjoy singing and dancing as well.  I always ride on my orange bike and I love having fun.

In addition, I know what the longest word in the dictionary is but I don't know what it means.  I love cooking food with my parents such as: Maori bread, mashed potatoes and homemade cake.  I am good at all sorts of sports such as: swimming, soccer and sprinting. My favourite colour is blue.  I have fantastic friends and their names are  Shanelle, Hilda-Rose, Lauren, Sina and Lana. I also love eating fruit.   Sometimes, I have to help my classmates with their work.

Moreover, I try my best to not do anything wrong.  When I grow up I want to be a dentist or a builder.  Many people say to me” be a dentist  because they make a lot of money”.  I have a teacher that teaches me very well so I can learn some more interesting things.

Last but not least,  I like playing on bouncy castles. I am on list 8 for spelling and when I’m bored I write poems.  I can count to ten in two different languages.  My favourite subject is Maths because I learn different strategies to solve problems.
