Word problems

WALT : solve word problems using the strategies we have learned in class.

Melissa weighs 156 kg. Sandra weighs 98 kg pounds. How much heavier is Melissa than Sandra?
156-98=58            156-98=58
100-90=10             98+2=100
50-8=42                  156+2=158
6+42+10=58 kgs        158-100=58 kgs

If there are 236 bottle caps in a box and Jeffrey puts 188 more bottle caps inside, how many bottle caps are in the box?
236+188                                  236+188
236-2=234                               200+100=300
188+2=190                               30+80=110
234+190=424 bottle caps✓         6+8=14   
                                                 300+110+14=424 bottle caps

Brian went to the store 4 times last month. He buys 89 erasers each time he goes to the store. How many erasers did Brian buy last month?
89x4=                                 89x4                                        
80x4=320                          12x4=48
9x4=36                               77x4=308
320+36=356 erasers.      308+48=356 eraser

Victor has 135 apples stored in boxes. If the are 9 boxes, how many apples must go in each box?
135 ÷ 9 =                      135 ÷ 9=
108 ÷ 9 =12                  36 ÷ 9 = 4
27÷ 9 = 3 99 ÷ 9 = 11

12 + 3 = 15 apples 11 + 4 = 15 apples
